About Eleuthera:
Eleuthera Bahamas, (pronounced E-Loo-Thra) is located approximately 220 miles from the coast of Southern Florida and about 60 miles from Nassau, Bahamas. Eleuthera is a long skinny island averaging only a mile wide and extending over 110 miles in length. Its long skinny shape gives way to miles and miles of spectacular beaches just waiting to be explored.
Eleuthera is sparsely populated with only about 11,000 people scattered among 200 square miles. The two largest settlements on the island are Rock Sound and Governors Harbor, both with a population around 1500. Most of the settlements are small little communities, filled with colorful buildings and friendly people always offering a warm welcome.
Eleuthera unofficial motto is “Eleuthera, it’s not for everyone” and once you have been there you will understand how very true it is. You will not find the Nassau or Paradise Island style all inclusive resorts on Eleuthera. If you are looking for beach-side service or a variety fine dining, shopping and entertainment options, Eleuthera is not the place you are looking for. If you are looking for a place where you can walk to dining and shopping, go to organized events for the kids, take a group charter out to snorkel, or swim with the dolphins and/or sharks, Eleuthera is not what you are looking for. What you will find on Eleuthera is a quiet sleepy island full of small widely spaced settlements, spectacular deserted beaches and some of the friendliest and most generous people you will ever meet. There is a small handful of guides offering individual fishing, snorkeling and diving trips. Evening entertainment is limited to the Friday night Fish Fry in Governors Harbor or live music during happy hour at one of the widely spaced local bars and restaurants. There are a few fine dining restaurants and the rest are small local cafe's and take-a-way's. Everything is widely spaced so a rental car is required. Most of the accommodations are self catered vacation rentals, with a few small inns, boutique hotels and resorts.
If you can self entertain and quiet beauty and simplicity is what you are looking for in a vacation destination than you have found the right island. Eleuthera is absolute paradise for the do it yourself vacationer looking for lazy days spent on beautiful secluded beaches and quiet nights sipping cocktails while stargazing at the most amazing night sky you will ever experience. The endless deserted beaches offer plenty of unguided swimming, snorkeling and diving opportunities and if the weather is right even surfing. Eleuthera also has a variety of guided and do it yourself fishing opportunities. Our favorite pastime on Eleuthera, besides just plain relaxing, is to drive around the island till we find a deserted beach and spend the day lounging, swimming and snorkeling. I have heard a few people compare Eleuthera to a third world country with the prevalence of abandoned and hurricane damaged homes and lack of modern day luxury, but many consider it "Heaven on Earth". We are in full agreement with the heaven on earth sentiment, but we have a casual do it yourself vacation style, so make sure you do your research before you settle on a fabulously simplistic vacation on Eleuthera.

We decided to create this website both for our love for Eleuthera and it's people and in order to help others considering Eleuthera as their vacation destination. What we have tried to do is give visitors an idea of what Eleuthera has to offer, and what luxuries and amenities you will or will not be able to find. We have done our best to include maps with locations of the all of the settlements and what they have to offer as far as bars, restaurants, shopping opportunities and lodging options (that we know of). If you know of anything we have missed and you feel should be included please contact us.
