Spanish Wells and Harbour Island:
Spanish Wells and Harbour Island are two small island settlements adjacent to Eleuthera that are quickly accessible by water taxi. Both islands are uniquely different from Eleuthera and in our opinion should be considered as entirely different destination options or great places to visit on a day trip.
Spanish Wells:
To get to Spanish Wells you take the Government ferry from Jeans Bay at the very northwestern tip of Eleuthera. The settlement is located on the island of St. George’s Cay and is also connected by bridge to Russell Island. The Spanish Wells settlement is about the same size as Governors Harbour, but their livelihood is largely based around the lobster fishing industry instead of the tourism industry. They are a friendly, tight knit community and one of the few predominantly white areas of the Bahamas. Spanish Wells is a dry island, however visitors are welcome to bring alcohol over from the liquor store located next to the dock in Jeans Bay. Harbour Island:
To get to Harbour Island you take a water taxi located on northeast part of Eleuthera just east of the North Eleuthera Airport. Harbour Island is known for its wonderful people, and what is said to be the most spectacular pink sand beaches in all of the Bahamas. Harbor Island is also known as an occasional playground for the rich and famous. This tiny 3 square mile island is home to approximately 1500 to 2000 people. If you like the friendly people and beautiful beaches of Eleuthera, but want a few more scheduled activities, shopping and dining opportunities, or just prefer people watching while someone serves you drinks on the beach than Harbour Island might be a better vacation destination option for you. If you are staying on Eleuthera, Harbour Island is also great spot for a day trip and you can easily explore the entire island in a day with the assistance of a golf cart rental. If you are planning a day trip try not to go on Sunday, as most places are closed and if you are looking forward to eating lunch at Sip Sip, they are also closed on Tuesdays.
